Today I was informed by our biller that we may be against Mastercard compliance due to the fact that users can upload images and photos (including user icons!) without first being verified with photo ID and compliance record holder (2257) info. I am pushing back on the strength that our biller has nothing to do with the social networking aspects of our site, as they only bill for our store system. But given the extreme integration of the store system with the social networking here, I have little hope that this explanation will hold water with them. We may well have to require complete verification before allowing any image or content uploads whatsoever, a possibility for which I am coding UMD for now. Of course this pre-empts any protections afforded us by Section 230 and disregards our spotless reputation for due diligence in a timely manner, all with little guidance as to what the CC companies actually want going forward (I don't think they actually know), but this is where we are. I'll make a post in the main forums once I know enough to post about.
I mean...is this JUST for Mastercard? Cuz....you could always just say "fuck mastercard" cuz they are getting very authoritarian with the shit they want.
Okay they just gave us the clear We are just going to have to restrict some things going forward until users are verified, such as photo galleries. Sorry for that. Legacy content is okay for now so it won't be taken down.
Hi I know you are being put in an awkward pace by the CC companies. I'm guessing this is why the videos tab has gone for non verified users. But I worry being asked for photo ID to post as a normal user (without a store) is going to put off a lot of new users from joining the site and posting content. I was nervous about joining so I think being asked for photo Id really would have stopped me. I've not been a member to long but I love this site and its little community, I'd hate it die off and/or move to twitter or similar. Also thinking about what happened to Xtube.
Does free content from users without stores have anything to do with the CC companies as no one is using their service to pay for it? Is there a way to make the store and social parts more separate? I understand the stores pay for the upkeep of the site. (Thanks for all the hard work)

I 100% agree. I hate this.

It's separate, but this site is very unique. Our biller (and other billers) don't have a lot of sites that integrate the stores and the social networking so tightly. It's usually either-or. We can't expect the CC companies' compliance officers (who are currently reviewing this site) to take the time to make the distinction either. To them we are all tube sites that have to verify every user who uploads anything. I haven't made any stickies with more clarification because I'm still back and forth with Epoch, but I'll make a post once I know more!
Well... I like many other people here have been around since the early 2000s on up.
To this day UMD has to be one of the safest communities i have ever seen.
Like even when people post pictures and stuff, typically you're not going to find them unless you're specifically going out of your way TO find them. Same with videos. A video might get leaked here or there, but as a whole the content on this site from what i have seen stays on this site.
I don't have any issues verifying myself when all these factors are considered. I feel like this is a safe place, and It's nothing like giving your ID to Facebook or Google or Amazon for example.
Looking at my profile, it says: "User Verification Required if you have explicit content or own a store"
However, it sounds like this is now required for *all* pictures (e.g. I can't update my profile icon without verifying). So, maybe worth editing that prompt on the profile page?

I am verified and yet I just tried to change my profile picture and it is also at pending approval - nothing explicit at all about it. But just goes to show that being verified doesn't seem to matter in this regard to posting pictures.
Thinking a bit more about the process, would it be practical/desirable to put the whole post on hold until photos are approved? (Particularly when it's the first post in a thread.) There are times when I look at a post and there's a brief paragraph followed by loads of placeholder images. Right now, this is an example: https://umd.net/forums/happy-new-year-some-self-pies-to-celebr
If I check back later, I'm sure that either the images will be approved or the whole post will be deleted. However, I might not remember to look at it again unless someone comments, and right now there's nothing to comment on.

I thought about that, but it would be wayy too complicated, programmatically. I'll keep thinking about it tho! Thank you for the suggestion.
